Nafta Professional (TN)

The NAFTA Professional (TN) visa allows citizens of Canada and Mexico to work in the United States in prearranged business activities for U.S. or foreign employers. The following minimum conditions must be met in order for an applicant to qualify for a TN visa:

 

  • Applicant is a citizen of Canada or Mexico; 

  • Profession is one of a list of professions enumerated in NAFTA. These professions include accounting, dentistry, nursing, graphic design, engineering, and management consulting;

  • Position in the United States requires a NAFTA professional;

  • Applicant will work in a prearranged full-time or part-time job for an employer. Self employment is not permitted;

  • Applicant has the qualifications, meeting the specific requirements, education, and/or experience, of the profession.

Duration of Visa

 

The TN visa allows for an initial stay of three years in the U.S. After this initial period, the visa may be renewed. There is no limit to the number of available renewals.

FAMILY VISA ELIGIBILITY

 

Spouses and minor children (under 21 years of age) of TN visa holders may apply for a TD visa, which allows them to accompany TN visa holders during their stay in the U.S. TD visa holders are not allowed to work in the U.S.
